What Is a Gag?
A gag is a type of mouth bondage. A basic gag wraps around your head with a piece and sits in or against your mouth. Straps are often made from stretch elastic or silicone. You’ll also find gags made from leather with clasps and a few mask-style gags. Some masks lock into place. Either way, they’re intended to fit a variety of heads. The bit or ball is often silicone but can come in leather or rubber, and hooks are typically metal. If you’re sensitive to certain metals, look for gags of nickel-free metal or a different type of mouth gag. These toys are broadly intended to force the wearer to do something or make it impossible to do certain things. But the different styles of gag achieve various goals, including: - Muffling moans and other noises - Preventing the wearer from talking - Making the wearer drool - Forcing the mouth open for penetration by penis, finger, or toy - Connecting to other bondage gear - Attaching to objects While it’s not always the case, gags and humiliation go hand in hand. If you want to see your partner drool or even enjoy being humiliated yourself, a gag is an excellent addition to your toolbox. You can even buy the Humiliator gag that attaches to everything from feather dusters to ashtrays to combine humiliation with service for the ultimate submission!
Types of Gags
Mouth gags fall into several main categories, although you’ll occasionally find unique gags outside of these categories. Ball Gags Balls make for classic gags. Typically, they sit partially inside the mouth so your front teeth bite into the gag. Ball gags may be solid or hollow, and some may have holes to make breathing easier. Bit Gags Bit gags are thinner, horizontal toys you bite down on, like a horse’s bit. This makes bit gags especially good for pony play. They may also be more comfortable to wear than ball gags. You can even find bone-shaped gags in this category! Penis Gags Penis gags look exactly like the name suggests but smaller (usually!) The head might enter the mouth more than a ball gag, and you may not have to spread your mouth as wide when wearing a penis gag as you would when wearing a ball gag. O-Ring Gags These gags have O-rings that usually sit just inside your lips between your teeth. Some similar gags place the O outside of the mouth, however. If the ring connects to the strap with two bars on either side, it may be called a “spider” gag because it resembles the creatures. Either way, an O-ring gag lets you use your mouth slightly more than a ball gag. Some are designed specifically for forced deep thorating. Hook Gags With this type of gag, two or more sets of hooks will pull back your lips and teeth to open your mouth. Claw gags are hook gags where each hook has at least two prongs. These gags keep your mouth open like O-rings but much wider. Other Gags Some genuinely unique mouth gags exist, including the humiliator as mentioned earlier. You can find gags with pussy attachments for face fucking, feeding gags, medical gags, gags that are also harnesses, and even vibrating mouth gags! Some gags have decorated shapes such as roses, hearts, or giant lips. Inflatable gags are especially interesting because you insert them before inflating them to spread your cheeks and mouth from the inside.
How to Pick the Right Size Gag
While bit and hook gags are generally one-size-fits-most, this isn’t always the case with ball and O-ring gags. Ball gags come in different sizes to maximize comfort and minimize pain. Like rigid cock rings, if you choose ball gags or O-ring gags that are the wrong size to remove once inserted, especially once you bite down on them or tuck them behind your teeth, you might need emergency surgery. How Ball Gags Are Measured Ball gags come in sizes that are pretty similar to many dildos or vibrators. The balls are measured by diameter or the distance from a point on one side of the ball to the exact other side. Imagine cutting the sphere in half and looking at the circle at the center. A line that goes straight across the center is the diameter. Because O-rings are circles, they’re also measured by diameter. You’ll see two measurements, however. Inside diameter Outside diameter The outside diameter is the measurement that has to fit inside the mouth. Anything that you want to insert into the wearer’s mouth must be smaller than the inside diameter. You’ll commonly see balls and rings ranging from 1.5” in diameter to 2.25”. Many companies make ball gags of different sizes using ¼” increments. If you have insertable toys of different sizes, you can experiment with them in your mouth to see what feels comfortable. You want a toy that stretches your mouth open comfortably.
How A Gag Should Fit
A gag is considered a good fit if you can bite down on it while it touches the roof of your mouth. It should be comfortable enough to wear for at least 20 minutes and easy to insert and remove without force. You shouldn’t be able to talk so that others can understand you easily, but you should be able to bite down on and drool around the gag. Finally, if the tips of the upper teeth are visible, the fit is generally good. A gag may be too small if: - You can still be understood when you talk - You can swallow, preventing drool - It sits almost entirely behind your front teeth On the other hand, a gag may be too big if: - It forms a seal, and you can’t drool - You have to insert it forcefully - You can’t easily remove it - It sits almost entirely in front of your teeth - It stretches your mouth so you can’t see your teeth
Risks of the Wrong Size Mouth Gag
Using a gag that’s too big can be dangerous. It can hurt your teeth or gums, cause you to gag, and prevent you from breathing. Consistently using a ball gag that’s too big can also cause TMJ and prevent you from being able to wear gags in the future. If you’re unsure, err on the smaller side. You can always start smaller and go up a size or temporarily switch to a smaller ball if uncomfortable. Most people can wear a slightly smaller or larger gag than their optimum size. You may also be able to wear larger gags over time.
DIY Mouth Gags
You don’t have to buy an expensive ball gag if you’re interested in mouth bondage. You can use any number of other balls around the house. However, those made from nonporous material like silicone will be the most hygienic. Alternatively, you can gag someone with something other than a ball. Underwear is a common example, and it works well, but you can choose any other small garment. After placing it into someone’s mouth, you can place tape over their mouth and face. Medical tape may work best to prevent pain, but you can also use bondage tape, which only sticks to itself. Make sure not to tape over their nostrils. It’s also a good idea to keep them hydrated because the fabric can absorb spit and dry out your mouth. Do not use anything small enough to lodge in the throat and cause choosing. Consider instructing your partner to hold a thin object, such as a pipe, between their teeth or create a more permanent gag with a PVC pipe. If you’re looking for something more elegant, rubber rings can create an attractive DIY mouth gag. Finally, you can also tie a bit-style gag with rope. This method means you don’t need a separate strap or tape to secure it to your partner’s head.
Caring For Your Ball Gag
How you care for your mouth gag will depend on its design and materials. The easiest design to care for will let you remove the bat or bit entirely to clean it with soap and water. Then, you can wipe down the strap with a damp cloth if necessary. You may have to wash the ball or hooks if they’re permanently attached to the strap without removing them. With these designs, do your best to wash the ball. Take care not to get leather too wet. However, silicone, elastic, or nylon are less vulnerable to moisture. You can spray silicone or metal with a 10% bleach solution or rubbing alcohol to sanitize, but you may not be able to get all the crevices if the gag is one piece. Again, bleach or alcohol can harm leather or fabric, so keeping those materials separate is essential. DIY rope gags can be untied and hand-washed with soap and water. Some can even be safely thrown into the washing machine. Mouth gags can be fun when they fit well, and you use them safely. Now, you know how to ensure both. So have a ball!

  • Health & LoveWhy You're Not in Competition with Your Partner's Vibrator

Like the folks at ToyChats, I am a fan of sex toys and recognize the ways they can improve your life. But not everyone feels the same. Some people dislike toys in general, while others have more specific concerns about their partners using sex toys. Usually, this takes the form of men who are concerned that their girlfriends or wives like to use sex toys. People may be afraid that they will be replaced by a vibrator or dildo. But these fears usually ignore one crucial thing: sex toys are tools with specific uses and not full-fledged human beings with whom we can develop relationships.

If you looked at my wishlist on craft marketplace Etsy, you’d find a few listings for glass dildos and leather restraints by makers who relied on the platform to find customers. However, clicking on a dildo won’t take you to an active product listing, and most of the stores appear to be on hiatus. This isn’t a coincidence, however. This summer, Etsy formally banned sex toys.
