Like the folks at ToyChats, I am a fan of sex toys and recognize the ways they can improve your life. But not everyone feels the same. Some people dislike toys in general, while others have more specific concerns about their partners using sex toys. Usually, this takes the form of men who are concerned that their girlfriends or wives like to use sex toys. People may be afraid that they will be replaced by a vibrator or dildo. But these fears usually ignore one crucial thing: sex toys are tools with specific uses and not full-fledged human beings with whom we can develop relationships.

If you looked at my wishlist on craft marketplace Etsy, you’d find a few listings for glass dildos and leather restraints by makers who relied on the platform to find customers. However, clicking on a dildo won’t take you to an active product listing, and most of the stores appear to be on hiatus. This isn’t a coincidence, however. This summer, Etsy formally banned sex toys.
