Writer, advocate, sex toy reviewer, host of the Sex Advice for Seniors podcast (which ToyChats was mentioned on, in episode 127 Episode: Talking Sex Toys with a Reviewer) entrepreneurial powerhouse, PR
advisor…and so much more, really whatever she puts herself to, you can be sure Suzanne Noble always leads with honest, good-natured, sex positivity.
This busy bright bubbly lady just produced a new booklet "Sex Toys and Supplements for Thriving in Later Life."
What is ‘Sex Toys and Supplements for Thriving in Later Life’ about?
I created it to help older people navigate the sex toy universe, which can seem overwhelming if you're a first timer or with limited experience using sex toys. Once I got started, I decided it would be useful to add supplements as well, which I've tried or have been recommended to me by those I trust. Then I got to thinking about products such as dilators, which aren't toys exactly but are useful for overcoming sexual dysfunction. Once I started thinking about all this, it became a far bigger project than I had anticipated.
You mentioned in your newsletter how you ‘went down the rabbit hole’ when trying to create the booklet. Should we assume that this because the hole is deep (pardon the pun) when it comes to the adult toys out there?
I've got drawers and boxes full of toys. Some of them are great, and others are not-so-great. However, I'm just one person, with my own particular preferences. I know, for example, a friend of mine who tried out some vibrating nipple clamps I gave her which sent her girlfriend to the moon and back, in a few minutes, where they did nothing for me. Similarly, a sex toy reviewer I really respect, has a particular fondness for a vibe with deep rumbling sensations, whereby I prefer ones that are set on a higher frequency. I don't believe the booklet should only feature toys I have enjoyed, but ones that my mates think are fab too.
Are you truly over-run with sex toys at this point in your life?
Yes, far more than I can use but they're impossible to dispose of in any way that's good for the environment, so I keep them all. There are some that I probably haven't looked at for more than ten years, but I can't bear to part with. Others are more recent, and I keep thinking, oh, that might come in handy someday. I know one reviewer who has a separate storage container just for her toys!
I haven't gone that far, although I would like to find a way of keeping them that doesn't take up so much space.
Do you think, by this point, you have pretty much come across all the sex toys or at least the many types of them that there are?
I have tried everything I have - some very briefly with a partner when we've both said, 'nope, don't like that' and others where we both said, 'ooooh, this is nice!' It can take me a while to get around to leaving reviews on my channels, because I have other work I do and reviewing sex toys isn't always my top priority. Also, I've noticed that I can become less sensitive with overuse of certain toys, so I do try and restrict my dependence
on them to the point where it may only be on a weekend date with a partner that I actually use any of them. This past weekend for instance, there was an awkward moment, when my usual vibe died immediately upon pressing the on button, and something I grabbed out of a drawer, I couldn't figure out how to turn on! When I did turn it on, I knew it wasn't going to lead to what I was hoping for, so I had to grab another toy, which I can rely on, to finish the job.
If you could whittle it down to a few simple rules for buying a sex toy, especially for beginners, what might they be?
Make sure they're made from safe material, are easy to use and don't feature too many buttons! Most these days are made from some form of medical grade silicon, which is what you need to look for. I also prefer
rechargeable toys, otherwise you can get through lots of batteries, which isn't very environmentally friendly. Finally, not everybody likes toys that involve penetration (I don't), so it's a good idea to consider what you enjoy first before delving into the catalogue of products available. How does one buy your booklet and what other goodies might one get with a subscription to your newsletter? I'm offering the book to my paid subscribers on Substack (see here) which also gives them access to my private chat, my entire archive
of podcasts (over 100), sexy stories, toy reviews.
I've also uploaded it to Amazon for £9.99 (see here).
