Sex Toy Hackers?

Two years ago this UK-based report was published revealing the “Risks and Psychological Harms Presented by Consumer IoT Products.” One of those products was sex toys. The research gave examples where hackers managed to infiltrate certain chastity devices ‘locking wears in,’ beyond just what their partner was teasing them with.

Talk about holding somebody for ransom!

Given what we all could encounter in anal beads, clit ticklers, or even a cock ring we might take to wrap around ourselves, or our lover, here are the 5 Best Rules For Assuring Sex Toy Safety In The Modern Age.

1. Body-safe materials

In our modern times, sex toy purchasers and players don’t have to worry too much about what a toy is made of. Almost all are constructed from hypoallergenic materials and are Phthalate-Free. But it’s always good advice to make sure when reading all about the toy you are about to buy/use that it is made of the latest, body-safe stuff or that whatever it is made of is not something you are allergic to (latex comes to mind in this case).

These days, there is even a wide variety of glass dildos and acrylic paddles on the market. Adult toys made of these materials are oh so easily cleaned and because they aren’t porous generally stay free of nasty little germs (and glass can be heated and cooled… wow!)

2. Take advantage of modern power

These days lots of powered adult toys are powered simply by plugging into a USB port. There are even advances coming for weightless batteries to be used in adult toys, making their power sources even easier to deal with. And the motors in our modern-day naughty playthings charge to ever more long-lasting life, so you can keep your vibrator humming for as long as you need it to.

3. Buy from a reputable seller

With so many sex toy manufacturers and retailers online and just as many reviews about them, you really can’t miss who is making what well…and who isn’t. Always choose from a line with a good reputation or that has been in business for decades.

4. Careful with how you're connecting

The above UK report noted that hackers infiltrated remote controlled sex toys via some of those toy’s Bluetooth Apps. Be careful to only use encrypted connections and never share information like passwords or anything else with anyone you don’t play or have sex with.

5. Clean, clean…and clean some more

Be it from two decades ago, or just now, cleaning your sex toy, by whatever means the toy’s manufacturer suggests (and you will almost always find instructions for this in any toy you buy) is tantamount to keeping your toy in healthy working order. In turn, this will keep your naughty bits healthy and in working order.

What a wonderful modern age we live in, where anybody can get off in any which way they like, with a whole host of wonderful little gadgets and gizmos. And applying just a few safety rules and some common sense you and yours can stay sex healthy for many years to come.

If you looked at my wishlist on craft marketplace Etsy, you’d find a few listings for glass dildos and leather restraints by makers who relied on the platform to find customers. However, clicking on a dildo won’t take you to an active product listing, and most of the stores appear to be on hiatus. This isn’t a coincidence, however. This summer, Etsy formally banned sex toys.
